Location: Holland, Michigan

This position will assist individuals in obtaining superior information about resources available to people with disabilities, systems navigation, and individual advocacy in a tested customer-friendly manner; using an effective problem-solving approach that builds individuals’ knowledge and increases ownership and autonomy.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Interview individuals to determine their needs, listening intelligently and asking follow up questions to reveal additional areas of support necessary
  • Provide individuals with information necessary to gain access to services they need to build independence
  • Provide referral to appropriate agencies and organizations, including suggestions on effective navigation of those systems and resources
  • Help individuals develop goals and action plans, and coach them toward self-advocacy
  • Guide individuals through government paperwork and processes to gain access to appropriate services
  • Cultivate partnerships with community organizations to familiarize them with our approach and to promote appropriate cross-referral
  • Research and become familiar with assistive technology and resources to aid in individuals independence
  • Willingness to cross-train and learn other positions at DNL
  • Other duties as assigned


  1. Bachelor’s degree preferred
  2. Ability to analyze government programs and services and communicate processes to a novice
  3. Ability to recognize, anticipate and meet the needs of individuals we serve
  4. Excellent listening skills are absolutely necessary. This includes the ability to suspend judgment, listen, and learn.
  5. Familiarity with local relevant agencies and resources a must
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  7. Computer proficiency, especially web-based
  8. Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and direction
  9. Detail orientation and effective organization skills
  10. Ability to plan and implement goals and objectives to achieve outcomes
  11. Values consistent with those of Disability Network and the independent living philosophy
  12. Ability to be independently mobile in the community
  13. Personal experience with a disability is considered an asset
