What is Get Active?

Disability Network/Michigan, in partnership with Michigan Disability Rights Coalition,  provides an online tool called Get Active that makes it easy to tell law and policy makers what you think about issues that are important to you.

Get Active can also be used to help raise money for Centers for Independent Living or specific causes that are important to the disability community.

What happens if I become a member of Get Active?

• Once you become a member of Get Active, you will get email messages with a link to what is called a campaign.  Each campaign concerns a policy issue that the disability community should be aware of. Examples of campaigns  include: Changes in Medicaid, Transportation Funding and Housing  Regulations.
  
• After you have checked out the campaign and are aware of the issue, you will be able to send specific law and policy  makers a letter with one simple click. The letter is provided for you and if you wish, you can personalize it so that it fits your exact view.
  
• Once you are satisfied with the letter, you can send it to all the targeted law and policy makers with one simple click. Get Active will fax it or email it,  depending on which is the best way to reach the  person you are sending it to.
  
• If you don’t want to participate in a  campaign, you don’t have to. Just ignore the email or leave the campaign page without sending the message

Why Does Get Active Need My Home Address?

The ONLY reason for your address is to make sure that your letters go to the right person.  Get Active uses your address to find out which political district you live in and who your targeted law and policy makers are. NO OTHER USE IS MADE OF YOUR ADDRESS.

Will my personal information be shared with anyone?

NO!!  Disabiliy Network/Michigan, MDRC, and the Get Active corporation will never use your personal information for anything other than invitations to participate (and that will be by email), and to identify the district you live in, so that the right people get your message.

Does it cost anything to participate?

NO!! Get Active is a totally free service.  You only give money if you want to   give.  Occasionally, you will see  requests on the Get Active web page or in your email inbox to donate money to support our cause.  Whether you choose to donate or not is up to you and it doesn't affect your status as a Get Active advocate. 

The Get Active  system allows you to send a letter to the people who control funding for our CIL’s and our important  programs. For instance: appropriations  committee members that control CIL  funding and executives in state government who make funding  decisions.

You may be asked to write those people to ask for money.  Again, sending a message is entirely up to you.
